PETCO Foundation Campaigns for Pets in Need

Spring is a time of new beginnings and that's why the PETCO Foundation is once again launching its annual Spring A Pet fundraiser to benefit animal welfare groups nationwide in hopes of a new beginning for the millions of companion animals they shelter.

Starting today, all PETCO stores nationwide will collect donations on behalf of local animal shelters and rescue groups. The annual campaign will last through May 4.

The PETCO Foundation has partnered with the makers of PEDIGREE dog food who will support the Spring A Pet campaign by donating $1 for each purchase of PEDIGREE products - at PETCO stores or on PETCO.com - of $10 or more.

Each year millions of companion animals flood animal shelters across the country, most of which have very limited resources and all of which have ever unlimited compassion for animals in need. This is why each spring the PETCO Foundation asks the generous and compassionate pet parents visiting our stores nationwide to make a donation in support of these groups and the animals they shelter.

Approximately five to seven million companion animals enter shelters nationwide every year with approximately three to four million euthanized due to a lack of space or resources to adequately care for them, according to estimates by The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Only one in 10 animals received by shelters has been spayed or neutered.

PETCO customers can make a difference by purchasing Spring A Pet donation cards for a $5, $10 or $20 donation at PETCO stores nationwide or by donating to the campaign online. Customers donating $20 or more will receive a commemorative photo album.

Last year, we raised nearly $1.7 million with all donations staying in local communities.

Please give generously to this important fundraiser to give a new beginning to as many animals as possible this spring.

PETCO Foundation, Royal Canin Help Animal Shelters Care for Animals in Tucson Hoarding Case

When more than 800 animals were rescued from a Tucson home in a hoarding case last week, local animal welfare groups sprung into action -- and they got a helping hand from the PETCO Foundation and pet food company Royal Canin.

The rescued animals overwhelmed local shelter resources. And when the Humane Society of Southern Arizona called me, help was soon on its way.

I told them to send a staff member to PETCO's Tucson Mall store to pick up kennels, beds, crates, food and toys, which were donated by the foundation. I explained the situation to our friends at Royal Canin, and they jumped right in with a major donation. By the next day 50 30-pound bags of Royal Canin Chihuahua food, 700 5-pound bags of Chihuahua and puppy food and 700 books about caring for Chihuahuas and small-breed puppies were on the way to Tucson to be provided to people adopting the rescued animals.

This was the largest seizure that I have been involved with, but thanks to the outpouring of community support and the generosity of everyone and every organization involved, all of the dogs rescued in Tucson have already found new families and homes. The Humane Society of Southern Arizona did a wonderful job of placing the animals.

PETCO customers nationwide can make a difference in the lives of animals affected by these types of situations by donating to the PETCO Foundation during its annual Spring A Pet campaign March 30 through May 4. Last year's campaign raised nearly $1.7 million, with all donations staying in local communities.

Reusable PETCO Bags Now Available

I am so excited about the reusable bags that PETCO is now carrying at all of our stores nationwide. I feel much better carrying my dog food in one of these instead of doubled plastic bags. The bags are only $1.99 - with all proceeds going to the PETCO Foundation! This is a great way to not only support the environment, but also homeless pets across the country. You can find them at your local PETCO in the "Natural" section, or ask a PETCO associate for one.
