Ellen, Halo, PETCO and Me!

Yesterday, I was in LA for the day for business and to attend The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Recently, Ellen became part owner of Halo, Purely for Pets -- a terrific line of all-natural, holistic pet food wecarry at PETCO, which Ellen feeds to her own pets. We've been working with Ellen and Halo's teams to re-launch the Halo brand at PETCO stores nationwide starting this weekend. Starting Sunday, March 2, all Halo products will be 20% off at all PETCO stores and on PETCO.com

Click here to see a very funny video of Ellen talking about Spot's Stew on PETCO.com.

I had loads of fun at the taping! I've met Ellen several times before and she is absolutely delightful (check out my picture). The show airs today, Friday February 29th 2008. I was sitting in the front row, so you may see photos of me in the audience. CLICK HERE TO SEE ELLEN TALK ABOUT HALO PET FOOD ON THE SHOW I found the following announcement directly from Ellen's website today:

Today Ellen announced that she has become a part owner of what she believes to be the best pet food on the market. It's called Halo Purely For Pets ...although Ellen says she finds it delicious too. Ellen has been feeding it to her pets for years and hopes that you let your pets try some".

Celebrate Valentine's this Saturday with your pet!!!

I don't know who is more excited about tomorrow's Valentine's pet party -- me or my dog Parker. He loves going into the store anyway, but on a day when there is going to be tons of pets and giant cookies, I think he may get over stimulated.

Its too bad that at a PETCO associate we can't win the kissing contest, because I know that Parker gives the best kisses. They're a little wet but good.

Check back next week for pictures and maybe even a video. Click here for more info on the Valentine's Pet Party this Saturday at 2 p.m. in PETCO stores nationwide.

Unselfish Animal Kindness

There is something very inspiring in acts of unselfish animal kindness.

The lives of two animal-loving families intertwined two weeks ago after a curious 10-month-old kitten curled up in her owner's suitcase in Florida and flew more than 1,200 miles across the country only to be mistakenly picked up at the airport by a stranger.

Long story short, the kitty, Gracie Mae, was reunited with her family -- and two days later flew back home from Fort Worth, Texas, with her owner -- this time in her own carrier purchased at PETCO.

The story made national headlines and the two families were guests of The Ellen DeGeneres Show last week when they were presented with $2,500 in PETCO gift cards each.

And here comes the best part. Robert Carter -- the man who mistakenly took the suitcase with the stowaway kitten from the airport -- decided to donate the PETCO gift cards, topped with some of his own money, to Operation Kindness -- a no-kill animal shelter in Carrollton, Texas.

When I talked to him yesterday, Rob said that he could either buy a really fancy collar for his 7-year-old rescue dog Steve, or pay it forward and put the PETCO gift cards to a greater use with Operation Kindness.

And that's inspiring.

Brushing Your Dog's Teeth

This month is dental health month!Putting a price on your dog's teeth would be a tough task. He needs his teeth to eat, to protect and to express himself. It's important to keep the teeth he's got in good shape.

Brushing Your Dog's Teeth
Your dog probably won't open his mouth and stand patiently while you brush away at his teeth, especially the first time you try.

Start by getting your dog used to having his mouth handled. Gently massage his lips with your finger in a circular motion for 30 to 60 seconds once or twice a day. Gradually move your fingers into his mouth until you can massage his gums and teeth. This adjustment may take several weeks, so be patient.

Once he's comfortable with this routine, you can introduce a toothbrush. A soft child's toothbrush, a dog's toothbrush or even a washcloth or piece of gauze will work. Use a toothpaste developed specifically for dogs, which your dog may really like.

Never use human toothpaste - dogs can't spit the toothpaste out and it will upset your dog's stomach if he swallows it. You may only be able to brush a few teeth a first. However, with patience and time, eventually your dog should be okay with your brushing all of his teeth in one sitting.

Focus brushing on the outer tooth surfaces, as that is where most of the tartar buildup will be.
Daily brushing is ideal if you can find the time, but once or twice weekly will still keep you ahead of the game.

If your dog refuses to "open wide" every time you try to brush his teeth, consider using specially formulated dental diets or treats, enzyme-enhanced chews or dental toys to help keep tartar and gingivitis at bay. And try getting him used to brushing, perhaps with the assistance of an animal behaviorist, at a later date.
