Thursday, January 31, 2008 Smooch Your Pooch at PETCO Valentine's Pet Party, Best Kiss Contest
Nothing says "I love you" like a big slobbery kiss from your favorite furry Valentine. Pet parents can smooch their pooch, cuddle their cat or hug their hamster at PETCO's Valentine's Pet Party at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9.
The event, sponsored by Hill's Science Diet, will be held at PETCO locations nationwide. Festivities will include a best pet kiss contest, where pets and their parents can show their best public display of affection (for furry friends only). The top smoochers will be awarded a bag of Science Diet Oral Care Dog or Cat Food and a tin of Yip Yap breath fresheners for dogs. Following the contest, pet parents can return the favor and decorate a heart-shaped cookie for their special friend.
At the event, attendees will pose with their pet and get a free commemorative Valentine's Day photo frame, pets can "personalize" a Valentine's card with their very own paw-print "autograph" and PETCO's groomers will treat pets to a Berry Love spritz and stylish red or pink hair ribbons.
In addition, PETCO offers the following ideas to make Valentine's Day extra special for the love of your life - your pet:
Dress up your pet for the occasion in a red, pink or rhinestone collar, heart sweater, or flirty T- shirt with sayings such as, "My Mommy is Single" or "Dog Run Flirt."
Traditional Valentine's Day gifts such as chocolate and flowers can be harmful to your pet when ingested. Rather than exposing them to a serious health threat, give them a pet-friendly treat, such as cookies from PETCO’s treat bar or one of PETCO's exclusive Valentine's dog or cat toys, available in stores nationwide and on PETCO.com.
Treat your pet to a Berry Love Valentine Spa Works in one of PETCO's grooming salons. The grooming package is designed to clean even the dirtiest pets while creating a clean, luxurious coat and leaving the skin and coat shiny and smelling "berry" great.
Valentine's Day is special for small animals, too. PETCO offers heart-shaped glass gravel accents to spruce up your finned friend’s home and colored pet bedding that is perfect for pampered guinea pigs, hamsters, rats and mice.

"It's always important to think adoption first," said Chelsea Jones, regional marketing coordinator for PETCO, "and an event like this provides a fun and easy way for members of the public to choose a great pet."
Seven local animal shelters will participate: the Escondido Humane Society, the North County Humane Society, Shelter Pet Partners, Helen Woodward Animal Center, Chula Vista Animal Care Facility, Rancho Coastal Humane Society and the San Diego Humane Society & SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). Each will have animals on the premises for adoption, including cats and dogs. Adoption fees will vary with each agency. Thursday, January 03, 2008 Pets Don't Have to Do a Single Thing -- Just Be There!
You never really realize just how much they help you until that one moment comes I never realized just how much of an influence your animals could have on your life until I worked for PETCO.
One story made me realize more than any other. On Sunday, December 30th, I was ringing out a customer at the register and began to make polite conversation. She was a very polite woman -- the kind of customer that makes your day. I asked her how her holiday went, and she responded, "After the incident, everything was ok." I asked her about the incident. She told me her dog saved her daughter's life on Christmas Eve. I asked how and she began to tell me about their dog. She said he was a sweet dog and couldn't even hurt a fly. He never even growled at anything his whole life. She then said on Christmas Eve her 16-year-old daughter was home alone for a little while. In that time, someone broke into their home and threw her daughter to the floor and put a gun to her head. Then their 6-year-old rottweiler came and sat down on the floor next to the girl. The woman said her daughter's first reaction was to yell out "sick him" repeatedly to her dog. Apparently, though the dog never responded, that was enough. The man ran out of the home fearing for his life and her daughter called the cops.
It immediately reminded me that your pets don't have to do a single thing, just be there, and that's more than enough.

Wednesday, January 02, 2008 Holiday Hope for Tiny Tim
A couple of days before Christmas we had a family come into our PETCO who wanted to surrender a male dwarf hamster who they could no longer care for. We gladly accepted the little guy in hopes of finding him a home for the holidays. We set him up in the nursery, and as we did so we noticed that the little guy was missing one of his hind legs. In the Christmas spirit, our bird expert named him Tiny Tim, after the Charles Dickens classic A Christmas Carol. Over the next several days we talked Tiny Tim up to everyone who came in to buy a hamster hoping we would get him a home for the holidays. We posted signs announcing Tiny Tim's arrival and his need for a home for the holidays. On Christmas Eve, in the middle of my shift, a nice lady walked in and saw the sign for Tiny Tim. After seeing Tiny Tim she quickly adopted him and even kept his name. Needless to say, Tiny Tim had a great Christmas.
