15 Chihuahua Champs Advance to Finals

After three weeks of exhaustive search, the third annual PETCO Unleashed Chihuahua race has crowned 15 pint-sized regional winners who collectively beat nearly 2,800 other tiny racers. Nine hundred Chihuahuas and their cheering pet parents competed Saturday in the last round of regional races vying for a spot at the national finals and the chance to be named America' Fastest Chihuahua. Races were held in Seattle, Denver, Houston, San Diego and the Washington Metropolitan Area.

Ten regional winners from the first two rounds of regional races will now be joined by Papageorgio from Annapolis, Md., Rosco from Colorado Springs, Colo., Daisy from Mineral Wells, Texas, Cricket from Seattle and Elle from San Diego.

All 15 Chuhuahua teams will head to sunny San Diego to race for the coveted title of America's Fastest Chihuahua in front of cheering crowds between innings of a major league baseball game at PETCO Park, home to the San Diego Padres, on Sept. 2, 2007.

The national race promises to be a cliffhanger with talented rookies racing against two returning national champions: Chalupa of Hammond, Ind., and Tiger of Rosamond, Calif., and a returning regional champion Cricket of Garland, Texas. The national winner will earn bragging rights, a trophy, a $300 PETCO gift card and a year's supply of Royal Canin Chihuahua food - approximately 12 times the average Chihuahua's weight.

Five More Chihuahua Champs Crowned

Another 1,019 racers competed Saturday in PETCO's search for America's Fastest Chihuahua. Races took place in Boston, Dallas, Phoenix, Anaheim, Calif. and San Francisco. Click here for video.

The final leg of regional races will take place next Saturday, May 19th, in San Diego, Seattle, Denver, Houston and Washington, D.C.

Among Saturday's winners is Cricket, who took the title of Dallas' top dog in 2005 and placed second in last year's regional race.

Proud pet parents, Pam Martin and her 15-year-old granddaughter Brooke Stanfield of Garland, Texas, said that Cricket seemed extra focused on race day. Cricket's training began after he was rescued from a local shelter and began dog training classes. Pam says that after learning how to come when called, racing for Cricket was cake - with the help of some hot dogs, of course.

Other winners included speedy Moet, winner of the race held in Anaheim, Calif. who made it down the track in 2.34 seconds.

"Moet loves to run," says mom Carrie. "She likes to sprint between Troy (dad) and I in the hallway," she said. "We know she is fast, but we never expected to win. The race was a lot of fun."

Racing at the finals along with Cricket and Moet will be Minnie of Boston, Rosie of Phoenix, Clara Belle of San Francisco and the five winners from last week's races.

PETCO Stores Remove 16 Royal Canin Sensible Choice Dry Dog SKUs After Recall

PETCO stores nationwide are removing 16 SKUs of Sensible Choice dry dog food by Royal Canin after the vendor announced a voluntary nationwide recall of some of its products late Friday.

All stores have been directed overnight to immediately remove the affected products from the shelves. The recalled Royal Canin SKUs represent eight Sensible Choice dry dog food formulas.

Royal Canin announced the recall as a precautionary measure after trace amounts of melamine derivative were identified in a limited number of some of its products, the company said.

"This announcement is based on the company's ongoing extensive review of its manufacturing and quality assurance testing procedures, which identified trace amounts of a melamine derivative from tainted Chinese rice protein concentrate provided to the company by domestic ingredient supplier Cereal Byproducts, headquartered in Illinois," the company said in a statement.

"While a very limited number of Sensible Choice and Kasco products in this recall tested positive for trace levels of a melamine derivative, Royal Canin USA is voluntarily withdrawing these products out of an abundance of caution and because we are fully committed to the welfare of our customers' pets," said Olivier Amice, President and CEO of Royal Canin USA.

PETCO does not carry any Kasco products.

Royal Canin said it had no confirmed cases of melamine related illness in pets eating products affected by this recall. Last month, the company announced it will no longer use any Chinese vegetable protein suppliers.

The company has also reiterated that Sensible Choice cat food is NOT being recalled and is available for sale.

PETCO Stores Remove Natural Ultramix 3-ounce Cat Cans from Shelves

Based upon concerns expressed by the Food and Drug Administration, Castor & Pollux late Wednesday afternoon advised PETCO to immediately pull from its shelves all 3-ounce cans of Natural Ultramix Cat food.

Additional items in the United States and Canada have been added to the recall list that are not carried at PETCO. For a complete list of newly recalled products please click here.

Natural Ultramix Dog food cans are not being recalled and will remain available for sale.

The products affected were produced by Menu Foods during the November-March time period in which contaminated wheat gluten was used in certain products made in the company's plants. This voluntary recall is being taken as a precaution based on FDA concerns that additional products may have been exposed to contaminated wheat gluten on production lines or in common areas of the Menu Foods facilities.

To Corona's Rescue

Wednesday, April 25 started out to be a typical afternoon at the store, my District Manager arrived to do her routine walk and things we going as usual, but then a pet parents' nightmare occurred. Corona, a dog coming to the store for her first grooming appointment, collapsed upon entering the store and had a seizure. A quick-acting cashier immediately alerted me and my District Manager. Without hesitation, my District Manager got on the ground and started talking softly and gently rubbing the dog for comfort until she was able to come around. Eventually Corona became more alert and felt well enough to stand on her own. Although Corona was not able to get her bath that day, a PETCO groomer came out and gave Corona a complimentary nail trim. Corona's parents were so overjoyed at the kindness they received that they sent us a beautiful gift basket with balloons to express their thanks. It is great to know that we were able to help in a stressful situation and that we now have a customer for life because of PETCO's dedicated and passionate staff.
